About the 911 Communications Centre

As the largest civilian Division with the Victoria Police Department, our 911 Communication Centre employs forty-six permanent and casual staff in a variety of positions including dispatchers, call takers, trainers, switchboard operators and supervisors. The majority of the staff work twelve hour shifts, both days and nights, with only six dayshift positions available.

In 2011 the Communication Section dealt with over 45,000 calls for service, of which 3,547 were classified as the highest priority (Priority 1), which is defined as a high probability that death or grievous bodily harm will result.

Each 911 call is answered within an average of 5 seconds. On an annual basis approximately 4,500 of the 911 calls received are abandoned 911 calls.
